Small Thermoforming Machine  due to its small footprint, low energy consumption, and high flexibility, is being adopted by an increasing number of enterprises and R&D institutions. However, after the equipment is put into use, many users tend to focus more on production capacity and forming results while neglecting equipment maintenance, which leads to performance degradation, unstable forming quality, and even a shortened overall service life of the machine.

I. Importance of Small Thermoforming Machine Maintenance

The maintenance work of a small thermoforming machine is essentially preventive management that “prevents problems before they occur.”


Ensure long-term stable operation of the equipment and reduce losses caused by downtime due to failures. The working process of a small thermoforming machine involves the coordinated operation of multiple systems such as heating, transmission, pneumatic, and cooling systems. Wear, aging, or failure of any component will interrupt the entire production process.

Improve product quality stability and reduce production costs. If the equipment is in an abnormal working condition, problems such as incomplete edges, uneven thickness, deformation, and adhesion may occur, resulting in an increase in unqualified products and a higher sheet material waste rate.

Extend the service life of the equipment. Regular maintenance can slow down equipment aging and avoid premature scrapping caused by overuse or improper maintenance.

II. Maintenance of Main Components of Small Thermoforming Machines

These components are the basis for the normal operation of the equipment and are also the focus of maintenance work.

(1) Heating System
The heating system mainly consists of heating tubes, temperature sensors, and temperature controllers. Its function is to heat plastic sheets (such as PET, PP, etc.) to a softened state to meet forming requirements. The performance of the heating system directly affects the heating effect of the sheets, thereby determining product forming quality.

In daily maintenance, it is necessary to check the working status of the heating system every day, including whether it heats normally and whether there are signs of blackening, damage, or deformation on the surface.

(2) Forming Mold

The molds of small thermoforming machines are mostly customized designs to match specific product specifications. Their surface precision and integrity directly affect product quality. During operation, molds come into contact with heated plastic sheets and are prone to contamination by plastic residues, oil stains, etc. At the same time, they are subjected to long-term pressure and temperature changes, which may cause wear, deformation, or cracks. Therefore, cleaning, lubrication, and inspection work must be properly carried out.

(3) Transmission System

The transmission system of a small thermoforming machine mainly consists of motors, chains, gears, guide rails, and feeding rollers, ensuring coordinated operation of all stages of the equipment. Components of the transmission system are in motion for long periods and are prone to wear, loosening, and abnormal noise, so regular inspection, lubrication, and adjustment are required.

(4) Pneumatic System

The pneumatic system of a small thermoforming machine mainly consists of an air compressor, cylinders, solenoid valves, air pipes, and filters, ensuring fast and stable execution of various actions. Cleaning, drainage, and inspection work should be emphasized.

In daily maintenance, the operating status of the pneumatic system must be checked every day. Generally, the pneumatic system pressure of a small thermoforming machine should be maintained between 0.6–0.8 MPa. If the pressure is too high or too low, the air compressor parameters should be adjusted in time. Check the drainage condition of the filter daily. 

(5) Cooling System Maintenance

The cooling system serves to cool both the thermoformed product and the mould after heating, ensuring rapid product setting. The cooling systems of small thermoforming machines are primarily categorised as water-cooled or air-cooled.

For water-cooled systems, the coolant tank level must be inspected daily to ensure it remains within the specified range. Should the level fall below the minimum, replenish promptly using purified or distilled water. Avoid using tap water, as its mineral content may cause scale buildup, obstructing cooling passages and impairing efficiency.

For air-cooled systems, daily inspection of the cooling fan's operational status is required. Observe whether the fan rotates normally, checks for abnormal noises, and assesses for dust accumulation.

Proper maintenance of small thermoforming machines not only reduces equipment downtime due to faults, enhances production efficiency and product quality, and lowers production costs, but also extends the service life of the equipment.
